Wordless Brief
For this assignment, I will be creating a wordless sequential visual narrative. The narration will be carried out exclusively through illustrated images as well as narrative and stylistic coherence. The only words allowed include the title, a synopsis, onomatopoeia and signage/labels,etc. This assignment allows us to use or re-imagine an existing story, fable, podcast, film, artwork, documentary, or invent our own narrative. The wordless book should appeal to an audience that would benefit from not having to read words.
Considering the criteria for this brief, I decided I want to make a comic book adaptation of the opening scene from the film, ‘Baby Driver’.
I started my story narrative by drawing quick scamps of how I wanted the story to play out. I experimented with two different storyboards. The first one followed the opening scene to the movie where Baby lets loose before the car chase and dances to music in the car until his accomplices caught him in the act. The second storyboard is the car chase between the bank robbers and the police. I followed the scene from the movie almost exactly. This is something I will reconsider for future iterations as I think limiting myself to an exact recreation would only limit myself.
After completing this assignment, I can reflect on the work I completed. I wanted to create a retro style comic book because of my passion for comics. I decided to work with three colours for the book to add to the vintage style. I decided to use magenta over red as the third colour as a nod to the colour palette used in Baby Driver, the inspiration for this project. I think this worked out well in my favour as the colour printed out beautifully. I want my target audience (18-24 year olds) to engage with this in local comic book stores. I want my target audience to feel excitement and thrill while reading the pages of the car chase.
